Blood Parasites
Frequent hemoparasites (8/100 RBC) of various life stages noted; the morphology of the
organism suggests Hemoproteus sp., although Plasmodium spp. cannot definitely be excluded
based on morphologic evaluation alone; if clinically indicated, PCR is recommended for definite
differentiation of Hemoproteus vs . Plasmodium spp.

Electrophoresis Comments
The alpha 2 and beta globulins are increased and reflective of acute inflammation. Moderate to
marked increases in these fractions can be observed with nephritis, hepatitis, dermatitis, and
mycotic infection. Increases may also be observed with sarcocystosis and chronic chlamydiosis as
well as mycobacteriosis. Specific beta globulin proteins which often manifest as a monoclonal
appearing peak in this fraction are also increased in egg laying birds. Followup EPH may have
prognostic value in this case.
